I wrote to Betty just a few weeks before her death, wishing her a happy birthday and reminding her and myself how unselfish and warm she was to so many of us during her high-school days. I visited her and Jack (Curran) a few times during our college years; she continued being the open, welcoming person I knew, respected, and--in a way--loved. Donne writes that "any man's death impoverishes me, for I am involved in mankind." Had he known Betty, he might have written also, "Betty's death impoverishes me, for she gave so much to humankind." I wish her sons every good remembrance and celebration of her life.
